I've been searching lately for a budget smartphone that fits in a budget of $250 that has 3GB RAM+, 16GB internal storage + with expandable storage, and a bigger screen. The reason for this is my LG G2's display film was burnt already, because of playing Pokemon Go. (lol) Enough goofing around, let's take a quick look on the Xiaomi Mi Max.

Xiaomi Mi Max specifications:
  • 6.44 inches IPS Full HD display (1080x1920 resolution) with Corning Gorilla Glass 4
  • Pixel density of 342ppi and screen-to-body ratio of ~74.8%
  • CPU:
    • Qualcomm Snapdragon 650(Hexacore 4x1.4GHz Cortex-A53 & 2x1.8GHz Cortex-A72)
    • Qualcomm Snapdragon 652(Octacore 4x1.4GHz Cortex-A53 & 4x1.8GHz Cortex-A72)
  • Adreno 510 GPU
  • Dual SIM (Nano-SIM / Micro-Sim, dual stand-by)
  • Storage:
    • 32/64GB with 3GB RAM
    • 128GB with 4GB RAM
  • expandable via microSD upto 256GB (uses 1 SIM slot)
  • 16MP, f/2.0, rear facing camera with dual-LED (dual tone) flash (no OIS)
  • 5MP, f/2.0, front facing camera
  • HSPA, 3G , 4G LTE
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac
  • Bluetooth 4.2
  • GPS, FM radio, Infrared port, microUSB 2.0 (sad)
  • Fingerprint, accelerometer, gyroscope, proximity, compass sensors
  • Li-Ion 4850 mAh non-removable battery
  • Silver/Gold
  • MIUI 7
  • Android 6.0.1

Unboxing

The Mi Max comes with the standard white box with the Chinese description at the back of it.Once you open it, you'll find the device itself.

Here's what inside the box, its manual, simcard ejector, USB cable and its charger. Unfortunately the charger doesn't support quick charge 3.0, it is just a standard charger (5V). I probably going to use my old charger (charger of my G2). And that's pretty much it, no earphones included (as usual).

First Impression

I have the 32GB variant. I was going to buy the 4GB RAM with 128GB internal storage but unfortunately it's out of stock at Kimstore. So I bought the base line model with 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage for Php12,200 (pretty cheap tbh).

Since it is a large phone, about 7 inches in height, I assumed that it's going to be a heavy phone, but its not. Its weight is just about 203g (7.16 oz) and well distributed around the phone. In short, it doesn't feel heavy at all. Another thing that I noticed is its thickness. About 7.5mm thin, it is a thin phone actually. Since it is a thin phone, I can use this phone in one hand, or I just have big hands that's why I can do this, but I struggle at tapping the status bar (lol).

Overall, it feels good in the hand. It's not slipper because of the subtle texture of its back. Its weight doesn't bothers me at all after using this for almost 6 hours. It's fast. It doesn't stutter when switching applications. And one major two thumbs up for me is it doesn't feel hot after playing graphical intensive games (Gods of Rome and Pokemon Go). One thing to mention is its camera. Most of its indoor shots were grainy and dark but I'll talk about it in the full review of this phone that will probably posted by next week or 2.
